March 16, 2012 - Rising kindergarten students at Northwest and Belvoir will get a jump start on their first year of school by attending a new program called Kick Start Kindergarten. Beginning August 1, 2012, the program will run for nine days* at both sites from 8 a.m. – 12 noon. Transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
By starting kindergarten early, school officials hope to help their new kindergarten students establish routines and procedures early on with the goal of ensuring they each have a successful first year of school. The additional nine days will also give teachers the ability to assess the kindergarten students with Reading 3D. The technological resource incorporates the five main components of reading in a hand held tool and is equipped to immediately evaluate students’ reading skills. Reading 3D is designed to help drive instruction for individual students and to provide very individualized activities for teachers to promote success in their classrooms.
Kick Start Kindergarten is funded through the Federal Race to the Top grant. To be eligible for kindergarten, each child must be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2012. For more information on the new program, please contact Belvoir at 252-752-6365 or Northwest at 252-752-6329.
**Dates of Kick Start Kindergarten: August 1-2, 6-10 and 13-14.
