School Buses Return to the Roads

Bus
August 22, 2012 As the start of a new school year rolls around, the Pitt County Schools Transportation Department is gearing up for the return of yellow buses to the roads!

On Monday, August 27, approximately 218 school buses will be transporting more than 12,000 students to school each day and thousands of cars will be on the road taking students and employees to and from school.

Traffic congestion on or near school campuses can be a challenge during the first one-two weeks of school as parents, staff and others become familiar with traffic patterns. Parents and other drivers traveling in these areas are asked to be patient during this time and throughout the remainder of the school year.

Drivers should also watch for children in school zones and crossings and abide by the speed limits established for those areas. In addition, it is unlawful in North Carolina to pass a stopped school bus while the bus is displaying it’s mechanical stop sign and flashing red lights and is stopped for the purpose of receiving and discharging passengers.

Bus route information is available on our Transportation Department page along with safety tips for bus riders.

Together - the Transportation Department, school staff members, parents, students and other public drivers - can ensure the safety of our students as they travel to and from school.
