PCS to Operate on Optional Workday Friday, May 1

Pitt County Schools has been closely monitoring staff absences for Friday, May 1. At this time, teacher and bus driver absences are higher than usual, and we expect additional staff to request leave between now and May 1.

We have taken steps to expand our substitute teacher pool and developed a plan to utilize central office staff to support classroom coverage. However, as of this morning, there are nearly 500 staff absences, including approximately 200 unfilled substitute positions. The volume of absences exceeds our planned capacity for additional coverage, raising concerns about our ability to provide consistent, comprehensive supervision for students throughout the school day.

The Pitt County Schools Board of Education has approved transitioning Friday, May 1, from a regular instructional day to an optional teacher workday. There will be no school for students.

This calendar change will not require students to make up an instructional day.

We value our educators and appreciate the understanding and flexibility of our families as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students.
