It's the last week of school! How did we get here so fast?
Monday: Remediation begins for students who were not proficient on their EOGs; WEB Training for new WEB leaders
Tuesday: iReady Growth Reward Ice Cream Social to celebrate students who showed growth between the beginning of year and end of year iReady diagnostics. This will occur during student afternoon encore classes.
Wednesday: 8th grade awards practice; Victory lap for Cargile & Best to celebrate their upcoming retirement
Thursday: 6th Grade Awards 9-10; 7th Grade Awards 1:30-2:30; students may be checked out following their awards day as parents enter the gym.
Friday: Last day of school! 8th Grade Awards 9-10:45; students may be checked out following their awards day as parents enter the gym. Early Release at 12:30. Please make sure students have prearranged transportation ready at 12:30!
A special THANK YOU to our parents who created a VERY special 8th grade dance for our students! You are appreciated!
And an extra special THANK YOU to our proctors who volunteered to help us have a very successful EOG testing season. We literally couldn't do it without YOU. Thank you!
8th Grade EOG scores will be given to students Monday; we apologize for the delay. Some scores were delayed in being returned to us!
7th grade students who expressed interest in taking online high school courses as an 8th grader MUST return their parent consent by June 8th to Mrs. Eblin. We have to enroll students by June 9th. There are no exceptions to this date!
If your student received a letter for summer school, whether required or recommended, please complete the registration ASAP.
If your student received the letter for retaking 1 or more EOG, please respond ASAP so that we can make appropriate schedules. I am attaching the state’s scoring chart for you to make the right choice for your student to retest. So many of our students who scored “not proficient” were REALLY close!
Report cards will be mailed the week of June 12th. Included will be the following:
- EOY iReady reports for math and reading
- Math placement for next year (6th/7th grade only)
- Advanced (high school) course enrollment confirmation (7th grade only)
Report cards should be held out if there is an outstanding debt from the media center or technology.
There are MANY, MANY media center books still outstanding. Please take a moment tonight to look under beds, in the closet, or deep down in that bookbag for overdue books and return them ASAP. These debts will follow students to their next school year. Books can be returned to ANY PCS Media Center if you find them!
Attendance for the last week of school has been the million dollar question from parents (and students). By law, it is required that we take attendance every day. Also, we have to know who is in our building for safety reasons. However, there will not be additional consequences for absences during this last week. Students who were NOT proficient on their EOGs should plan to attend everyday for remediation of the skills they were not proficient in and plan to retest on the 12th, 13th or 14th.

PLEASE make sure your students arrive on time, especially if they plan to eat breakfast at school so they have plenty of time to eat and get settled in before we begin testing. Please refer to the testing letter attached to this email for more information.

Friday: PBIS EOY Celebration off campus at ECU North Campus Rec
Thank you to the parent volunteers who plan to attend the PBIS event on Friday. As a reminder, the PBIS event on Friday is an invitation only as a reward for good behavior exhibited this year. Students who did not meet the criteria to attend will not be permitted at the ECU North Campus Rec facility. We are looking forward to an exciting day! If your student has a balance on their cafe or technology account, they are also not able to attend until that is resolved. Call the front office if you have questions.
For our current 6th and 7th grade students, you will have the opportunity to submit your requests for encores for the 23-24 school year. In the report card envelopes that went home in April, there were details about the options available, particularly for our rising 8th graders and high school options, online and on campus. There are changes from this year to next. I’ve attached a summary of the options for students to select from beginning this week. Students will receive the link in the homeroom this week. They may choose to complete the survey at home with their parents, if they choose. Selection must be complete by May 19th for consideration. Any students who do not make a selection through the google form by the 19th will be randomly placed in encores. But all are AWESOME!

We had a VERY successful visit from the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence assessors. Thank you to our parent panel and our student panel for their time and meeting with the assessors. One thing was clear to the assessors - our parents and students love their school! We look forward to hearing the outcome of the review very soon!

Tomorrow kicks off Teacher Appreciation Week! We hope you and your family will take a moment to thank our teachers and staff for their love, work and support of your student.
Monday: All students will become “Day Users” for their chromebooks, as we prepare for testing. Please return with chargers and chromebooks to homeroom. Softball faces AG Cox at 4:00 for the conference championship game! Students may stay for this game, but should have rides ready to pick them up by 5:15 PM. Let’s show up to show these young ladies our support!

Teacher Appreciation Week is next week. Our PTA is wrapping up their annual giving drive to shower our teachers with appreciation! Parents and students are encouraged to show their appreciation for the work of our teachers and staff through kind words, notes! And those are always free!

Monday: NC Check-in Make ups in media center; Baseball/Softball play at home vs. AG Cox. This is one of our biggest in-county rivals and we expect a high attendance. We ask that parents ensure they are here between 5:15-5:30 PM to pick up students who stay after for the game.

Wednesday: Baseball/Softball play away; Track & Field will travel to JH Rose for their Meet. Students are welcome to attend and should be picked up no later than 5:30 PM; Boys/Girls Basketball and Boys Tennis will have an interest meeting for 8th graders going to DHC at 1:15 in the cafeteria.

7th Grade Parents: You are receiving an informational sheet about classes your rising 8th grader can register for that earn high school credit. Students will complete a Google form in May making their selections.
6th and 7th Grade Parents: You are receiving information about how your child will be placed in math courses next year.
6th Grade Parents: You will receive information about 7th grade immunizations. Make your appointments now!
If your student is at risk for retention due to grades (failing throughout the school year) or attendance, you are being notified. If your student has failed 3 or more classes during any marking period this year, I have personally met with them and sent a letter home with them. This letter lets you know that we will be considering all end of year data to determine placement for the next school year.
Additionally, you are receiving information about the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence assessment we are undergoing. Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence is a Federal Department of Education program that highlights schools of excellence around the country. A part of that process is hearing from our school community (parents) and our students. I’ve enclosed the survey questions in the report card envelope your student will be asked. If you choose for your student to not participate, you must return the opt out form by April 20th. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to give the assessors feedback about our school!

SGA is sponsoring a fundraiser for Riley's Army. Parents can send in money or checks with their students to purchase butterflies. They only cost $1.00 and all funds raised go directly to Riley's Army. The homeroom that sells the most butterflies will win a pizza party. The staff member who receives the most butterflies will kiss a goat. Who will it be?
Rides for students staying after school for soccer or baseball/softball games should plan to be picked up between 5:15/5:30. Any students not picked up by 5:30 will not be able to stay for future after school activities.
We can’t wait to see our students tomorrow, by 8:25 PM. If you’re a friend who rolls in at 8:27 or later - go ahead and get those alarms set now. We’re ready to get learning started on time after the long break!

As a reminder, Pitt County Schools, including the offices at Hope Middle School will be closed beginning Friday, March 10th at 4:00 PM until Monday, March 20th at 8:00 AM. Teachers and staff have been encouraged to rest and recharge during the break and will not be responding to emails or messages until Monday, March 20th.
We hope our students will also take this time to rest and recharge for the last part of the school year. However, if your student needs ways to keep their brain active and needs a break from cellphones and tablets, we encourage them to log into iReady, work in Canvas on missing or incomplete assignment or Mrs. Below’s favorite way to spend time: READ. 8th Grade has some fierce competitions happening with reading, we’d love to see those continue!

Chromebooks are coming to school not charged - this means students are not ready for their academic day when they arrive. Please help our students be prepared for a great day, by establishing a routine at night where they plug in their device. Funny how their cell phones are charged…consequences will be issued for being unprepared for class for those repeat offenders.
The cafeteria balance is adding up to over $4,000. If your child has an outstanding balance, they may be excluded from participating in field trips, PBIS rewards, dances, or participation on sports teams until the debt is paid. If your financial situation has changed and you need assistance, please visit the Pitt County Schools website for the Free/Reduced Meal Application or ask your child’s HR teacher for one to be sent home. Contact Mrs. Akia Davis, our Cafeteria Manager if you have any questions about your child’s account.
The dress code specifically excludes pajama pants and bedroom shoes - please reinforce this expectation with your student when they are leaving for school in the morning. Consequences will continue, as needed.

Our students participated in a lockdown drill this past Friday. Overall, they did great!
There has been a rise in students having an issue at school, an injury, conflict with a peer or feeling ill and not reporting the issue to an adult. Please remind students when in school, their first line of support are their teachers and Hope staff.

This week is National School Counselor week! Our school could not function without our two fabulous counselors. Please ask your student to take a minute to thank them for all they do for our school community.
Report cards and iReady reports went home last week. We hope you had an opportunity to reward your student for their hard work this past marking period. We have a room full of students who earned all A’s or A’s and B’s Wednesday at the Academic Ice Cream Social. Thank you to the PTA for providing that awesome reward & opportunity.
The AVID students are hosting a SHOE drive where they are collecting gently used shoes of all sizes, children and adults. Drop off locations are in the front lobby and at the bus entrance.

Reminders:
A new semester means new encore classes! This may mean new supplies are needed for students to be successful. It’s also a good time to refill paper, pencils, notebooks for core classes that have likely exhausted supplies bought in August. Teachers also appreciate donations of candy (for rewards), pencils, tissues, and clorox wipes to keep their classrooms running smoothly.
When your student’s report card and iReady report come home, please take a moment to have a conversation with them. iReady is a research based program that allows students to work at their instructional level, with the goal of closing instructional gaps in their personal learning and help keep other skills sharp that may not be a focus in the current unit. There is a correlation between their performance in iReady and on the EOGs. Please check-in with students to ensure they are completing their weekly assignments/practice. We saw some tremendous growth in many students from their beginning of the year to middle of the year diagnostics and we’re very proud of their hard work!
Ice Cream Social donations are needed for a successful event! Please consider donating.
Don't forget the PCS Climate Survey! The survey is open until February 14th. The goal is 20% of our community. Unfortunately, the survey does not give families the opportunity to give a narrative feedback. Also beginning new with us is Deputy Brock Flannery as our school’s resource officer. He’s been to Hope some already working our athletic events and subbing for Deputy G, but excited to make Hope his new home! Deputy G has taken a different SRO role at a new school.

Wednesday, we’ll welcome students back to school bright and early! Early Bird will resume at 7:45 AM for $1/student. As a reminder, 8:25 is the tardy bell. Students should be in their homeroom by 8:25 AM. There is NO FCA this week, that will resume the week of January 11th. Additionally, Beta Club will hold their monthly meeting on January 11.

December 18
Good evening Mustang Families! This is Mrs. Johnson with your LAST Hope Happenings for the 2022 school year!
Monday our spirit week continues with Holiday Wear. Students can celebrate by dressing to impress for their favorite holiday. The basketball teams will travel to EB Aycock to take on the Jaguars.
Tuesday students and staff should wear their favorite holiday headwear.
Wednesday students can celebrate the start of Winter Break with their favorite pajamas. School will dismiss at 12:30 for the extended break. Please make sure arrangements are made to have your student picked up no later than 12:45 PM.
Thursday, December 22nd-Tuesday, January 3rd school is closed for students and staff for Winter Break.
Students who ride buses 229 and 237 received letters with updated bus information. These changes will take effect on Monday. Some will have a new bus number and driver. Pickup and drop off times have been updated as well. This was done to address the overcrowding. Students who were assigned to the new bus will ride 412 with Mr. Terry Nicholson. We hope to have all the kinks worked out in the short week to start fresh after break.
School will resume on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. December 22-January 3 is a LONG time to be away from learning. If you are looking for ways to help keep your students engaged we have some ideas for you!
Reading. ALWAYS an option! Students can read or listen to books on Sora. Visit the HMS or local library and check out books that interest them.
iReady. Students may log into iReady and work on tasks in both math and reading. This practice is tailored to their skill set.
Handwriting (right?!? Our students use so much technology - this is an underrated skill!!!). They can practice writing in neat penmanship but writing thank you notes for gifts they received, journaling or writing in planners in preparation for the 2nd half of the school year.
8th Graders can also complete any of their applications for NERSBA, Early College or HSA. They can grab applications from the front office if they are interested.
Lastly, students can use Canvas/PowerSchool to see what assignments they are missing. The marking period will end about 2 weeks after we return from winter break.
The media center is excited to be part of the BIG LIBRARY PROJECT - a district wide project to update library collections. Parents can review the proposed purchase lists that are posted in the virtual library on the school website.

We know our Hope students can be BOTH, smart and athletic if. We’ll end the Spirit Week with Pajama Day. Please refrain from wearing pajamas before then. 8th grade students and parent - please remember you have a math and Math 1 check-in on Tuesday. Bring a CHARGED chromebook with you! Test window is from 8:25-11:15 - no check outs during this time!
Parents, we need your help. Please talk with your student about taking care of the school issued chromebook they have. We’ve received several reports of students attempting to intentionally damage their device in hopes that they will get a newer model. This is not the case, as we just don’t have the supply of newer models to accommodate all of our students. If the technician determines the damage to a device is intentional, your family will be charged the $200 replacement cost, as intentional damage is not covered under the device protection plan.

It’s going to be a BUSY week ahead!
Tuesday our students will take their second NC Check In. Testing will begin at 8:25-11:08 AM; It’s very important students arrive on time, with a fully charged chromebook. As a reminder, we are not able to call into classrooms during testing during that block of time. Progress Reports go home with students.
Wednesday Beta Club & FCA Meetings at 7:45 AM. FCA and Early Bird drop off in the rear and Beta club in the front.
Thursday SGA will have a full meeting at 7:45 AM; Check In make ups (in media center); Chorus Rehearsal (Unity Church); Basketball plays AWAY; Chorus Concert at 7 PM at Unity Church.
A message for our Early Bird Families- Please continue to prepay using School Cash Online. Make sure you are paying close attention to the dates listed. We have had many “IOUs” the past few weeks with students missing the prepay online or forgetting their daily $1.
We also need our Early Bird parents to continue pulling all the way forward and refrain from cutting out of line. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and traffic flowing, especially on Wednesdays when FCA meets in the Gym. There are a lot of students who participate in both programs and therefore a lot of traffic! Please help us keep cars off of Mills Road by making sure your students are ready to exit the car and following safe driving practices.
As a reminder, 6th and 7th graders who have older siblings, must be picked up in the lane with the youngest student. We’re doing everything we can to reduce the number of cars in the 8th grade lane in order to keep the flow of traffic moving and off Mills Road. Please continue to close the gaps in the morning and afternoon.
Cafe balance letters are going home weekly. If you have outstanding balances please pay those immediately to not disrupt your student’s meal service at school. If can be paid in installments, in full either online, with cash or check in the cafeteria.
With the cold/flu season in full effect, please remember to send in a note when your student is absent, upon their return. If sending an email to their homeroom teacher is easiest - that’s totally acceptable. We are not able to excuse absences with parent notes that exceed 10 days from the absence.
This is a time of year where we see high stress and high anxiety from our students, families and teachers. We value conversations and extend grace whenever we can. We ask you to reach out if there is something you’re concerned about. Always start with the teacher! It will save time, frustration and energy, every time. We can’t address something we don’t know is an issue.

It’s a quiet week ahead! Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser continues this week.

Remember to keep selling for our Texas Roadhouse gift card fundraiser. This is a great way to treat yourself or someone on your holiday shopping list to a legendary meal. The PTA will be hosting a spirit night at Texas Roadhouse on Jan 22nd, so you can buy a card now and use it in Jan and the PTA will get double the profit! Traffic was better during the short week! Some of it was the reduced volume of cars and some of it was those of you helping close the gaps between you and the car in front of you. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, continue to pull up so we can squeeze as many cars into the lanes as possible in the morning and the afternoon. Cars on Mills Road prevent our buses from loading or unloading students on time and block our neighbors from entering/exiting their driveways.
We’re rolling fast into December and winter break is upon us. Please help students to continue to make good decisions, stay on top of their school responsibilities, including iReady, homework and required reading so that they may fully enjoy the much needed winter break, coming soon.
November 21
Monday: 8th Grade Students will hear about the Health Sciences Academy and opportunities it will provide for high school students. As the former Coordinator and counselor for the HSA, Mrs. Slappey and I cannot recommend this experience for our students who know they want to work in the healthcare field or for those unsure. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about career options beyond doctor, dentist, and nursing.
Our basketball teams travel for their first games this season. We wish them luck!
As a reminder, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday there is no school for students as we observe the Thanksgiving holiday. School will resume, Monday, November 28th.
Well, friends. We’re on the naughty list with the traffic engineers with Pitt County due to the cars sitting on Mills Road at dismissal time. We are in an impossible situation with the volume of cars and buses, transporting the volume of students we have enrolled. But there are some ways we can improve and hopefully get back onto the nice list.

Please make sure siblings or neighbor carpools are picking up in the lane with the youngest student (6th grade is the FASTEST line, nearly every day!)

PLEASE pull all the way forward to the car in front of you, 4 or 5 half car lengths between cars in one lane, is the difference in upwards of 5 or 6 cars left on Mills Road. Stopping in the middle of the lane instead of pulling forward when there is space - even if your student is “right there” decreases efficiency drastically.

We URGE you to limit your cell phone usage and be an active participant in the carline so that you are constantly moving forward and watching for students and staff for their safety

If you are an 8th grade parent, consider arriving a few minutes later - 3:35 or 3:38, rather than at 3:30. Your line seems to have the most volume and their walk from classroom to car is the furthest.
We realize that many of you receiving this message are not the ones picking up, so we greatly appreciate you sharing this information with your carpools.
There are several opportunities for student travel to share with you for the summer of 2024. This is open to any student and parent as it is not affiliated with Hope or Pitt County Schools. However, PCS teachers will lead the trips with the support of travel organizations.
We are headed to Iceland! Current 7th Graders are invited on what is sure to be the trip of a lifetime! June of 2024 Mrs. Stanfield is sponsoring a 5 day trip around Iceland through the company World Strides. Your child should have come home with information about this trip on Friday. There is a parent interest meeting in the school Cafeteria on November 30th at 6pm. The travel Agent for World Strides will be present for any and all questions you may have! There is a discount towards the trip for anyone who signs up that evening! Any questions about this can be directed to Mrs. Stanfield at stanfij@pitt.k12.nc.us!
Hope 8th graders are invited to learn more about the July 2024 trip to Germany & The Alps hosted by Ms. Armour at DHC. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, it’s worth sharing with our school community how grateful we are to serve you and your family. Our Hope students are the reason we continue to do this work. As a reminder, this is a full week of school and next week students should attend Monday-Tuesday, 11/21-22; we’ll be closed Wednesday-Friday, 11/23-25 for Thanksgiving break
Parents are reminded that they do not need a doctor’s note to return to school after an illness; however, they should be fever free without medication for 12 hours, and no diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours. We saw a lot of illness in school last week. Please stay well, practice good hand washing and stay home when you are sick!
Students received cafeteria balances this week. It's critical that you send in the monies to settle those debts as soon as you are able. If you need to make small payments until it's settled, that is understandable. Unpaid balances may exclude students from events such as field trips, etc. in the future. If your financial situation has changed and you would like to apply for free/reduced meals, applications are available on the PCS website or for pick up in the front office.
A couple notes from the HMS PTA:
The HMS PTA is selling gift cards to Texas Roadhouse this Holiday season! If you plan on eating out or need gifts for teachers or other people on your list, this is a great way to take care of those needs while contributing to our school! You can order or sell gift cards in various increments, and they will be returned to you the week of Dec 12th complete with the HMS logo! Also, for every $30 in cards ordered, the buyer will receive a $5 coupon to Texas Roadhouse. Your child's envelope should go home on Tuesday with more information.

The bus driver shortage continues to plague our district and the state. We hate to have to run double routes, leaving students arriving to school or home later than expected. However, we've been able to train and hire two new drivers and feel optimistic that as we close out November - we'll see great improvement to routes, timeliness and spacing on buses. In the meantime, please stay alert for updates. Applications are always accepted for drivers at the PCS Website if you or someone you know is interested!
Afternoon dismissal is at 3:30 on a regular day - students must be picked up no later than 3:45. If you are not able to meet that expectation, you need to make other arrangements. On an early release day, the times are 12:30 and 12:45, respectfully.

The PTA is hosting its first dance since the pandemic, this Friday from 6-8 in the school’s cafeteria! We are so excited for our students to have this opportunity. We will release the students promptly at 8:00 PM. When picking up your child, you will enter the parking lot as if you were driving around to the front entrance. The line will snake you through the front parking lot before leading to the cafeteria. It will be dark at pick up, so your attention to the staff directing traffic will be of the utmost importance. Please do not drive around, cut through or dart through traffic. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

Makeup Picture Day is 11/16/22
The growing trend of pajama pants and crop tops is not a fashion trend we want to see at Hope. This trend is not within the PCS Appearance Policy. We appreciate our families’ help ensure students are dressed appropriately for learning on a regular school day. Pajamas are reserved for spirit weeks - but believe me, we all wish we could wear them to school on Mondays!

Monday we’ll host Volleyball at home beginning at 4:00.
Tuesday Cross Country will travel for an away meet.
Wednesday FCA will meet at 7:45 AM in the cafe. Football and Volleyball will travel for competitions.
Thursday SGA will meet at 7:45 AM. It is also an early release day with a Pep Rally scheduled for 10:00. Students will be dismissed at 12:30.
Friday is a Teacher Workday, no school for students.
Our Pep Rally is scheduled for 10:00-11:00 AM. Please know it will be difficult to locate students in the middle of the event, so if you need to check them out - please consider doing so before 10 AM or after 11 AM. If your student is sensitive to loud noises or crowds, please let their homeroom teacher know. History tells us that many students will be picked up early on Thursday, so please plan accordingly and be patient with us. We will not be able to dismiss students after 12:00 due to the volume of students moving in those last 30 minutes of the day.
Congratulations are in order to several of our staff. Mr. Langley was named Custodian of the Year, Mrs. Leonard Office Staff of the Year, Mrs. Bingaman, Teacher Assistant of the Year, Mrs. Roundtree School Nutrition Staff of the Year and Ms. Hopkins was named Teacher of the Year! We are so proud of these Mustangs and how they selflessly serve the students at Hope!
Big thanks to Mrs. Below and Mrs. Bingaman for another wonderful Book Fair week! If your student didn’t make a purchase this time, they will have the opportunity to do so in the spring.
Our staff is grateful for the PTA volunteers and donors for a fantastic Friday Treat! The Caramel Apple Bar was amazing!

Overall we are pleased with how students are settling into the rhythm of school. We ask that you remind students to make good choices in the hallways when transitioning to their encore and back to class. We want to ensure the transition is safe for all students and adults. Walking with a purpose, using an appropriate volume to talk and keeping hands to yourself are the reminders we give students daily.
We are also having conversations with students about appropriate lengths of shorts and skirts. The rule was adjusted to “mid-thigh”, but some shorts are coming as mid-UPPER-thigh. Please help students choose clothing that follows the appearance policy so they may feel confident and secure in their classroom setting.
Hard to believe we’re just about to end the month of September in the 22-23 school year! We look forward to seeing our Mustangs tomorrow morning, at Hope Middle School where every day is a GREAT day to be a Mustang!

Good evening Mustang families, this is Mrs. Johnson with your Hope Happenings for the week of September 19th.
We have a busy week ahead of us! Monday we will host Volleyball and Football @ 4 at Home. Students staying for either event need to have their ride pre-arranged to pick them up by 5:15 PM. Tuesday Cross Country will travel to Boyd Lee Park for a meet. Wednesday Volleyball will travel to Farmville Middle School to take on the Patriots. Friday is PICTURE DAY! Students are welcome to wear outfits that express personality, but reminded of the appearance policy.
Opening the middle lane for 7th grade dismissal has had a positive impact on the afternoon. We appreciate our families’ patience as we continue to improve our systems. In the morning, as a reminder, students should stay in their vehicles until staff are present and signal to do so. This is for everyone’s safety.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to address the events of Friday. Those of you who have been with me a while know that it’s my style to keep parents informed with transparent and timely information. I was disappointed the Sheriff’s Department released a statement before PCS or Hope Middle School could. And as the day settled down and details were available to share, I did not have the right words. 8 students were transported to the hospital for observation, after showing signs of being impaired or under the influence after consuming “gummies”. A student brought over-the-counter gummies, neither appropriate for consumption by children or allowed on a school campus, to school and shared with other students. The student responsible for bringing the items to school has been identified and appropriate consequences have been assigned. The students who were found under the influence have also received an appropriate consequence. This was a very scary experience for the students, staff and their families. The good news is all of the students were released to their parents by Friday afternoon without complication. In every experience, there is a lesson. I hope families will take this opportunity to remind their students of the dangers of sharing and/or consuming food or drink from another person, not knowing what it is or how it will affect them.
We’re nearly halfway through the first 9 weeks of school. Progress reports will come home the week of the 26th. Remind students to diligently work and submit assignments. If you have questions or concerns, contact your student’s teachers. Email is a great way to open that line of communication!
Mrs. Gilbert, our Assistant Principal has taken an extended leave of absence. Please keep her in your thoughts for good health. Until she returns, please help me welcome Mr. Will Sanderson who will serve our school every Thursday and Friday and every other Wednesday. He’s happy to be at Hope, where every day is a great day to be a Mustang!

This is Mrs. Johnson with your Hope Happenings for the week of September 12th.
Monday kicks off our Candyman Fundraiser. Students will watch a quick film in their homeroom to learn more about how they can raise money for their school! An information packet will be sent home with each student.
Tuesday our Cross Country team will host their first meet of the season. Wednesday the PTA will meet at 5:30 PM in the media center.
Thursday students interested in traveling to Costa Rica are welcome to attend an interest meeting in the media center at 6:00 PM. Football plays at home beginning at 4:00. Students staying should have their rides pre-arranged to pick them up at 5:15 PM. Students not displaying respectful, good sportsmanship behavior will be asked to leave.
Friday our AVID students will participate in a Signing Day to celebrate their decision to join AVID.
A couple reminders for the coming week:
Early Bird begins at 7:45 AM - however, students should not exit their vehicle until a staff member signals to them. Additionally, drivers should stay in line, darting around other cars is dangerous to the staff on duty and the students exiting their vehicles.
In the front parking lot for car riders, we beg you to pull all the way forward to the car in front of you. Leaving large gaps between you and the car in front of you causes unnecessary inefficiency. As a reminder, students can be dropped off in the morning in any of the three lanes. Only in the afternoon is it designated by grade
Drivers are also reminded to stay in the vehicle at all times. Parents may NOT park and walk up to the sidewalk to pick up their child.
A change to the current pattern is 7th grade students will be PICKED UP in the center lane of the parking lot. 6th graders will continue to be picked up in the lane that runs in front of the school and 8th graders in the lane nearest to Mills Road. We hope this change will improve our afternoon pick up process.

Good evening Mustang Families,
This is Mrs. Johnson with your Hope Happenings for the week of September 5th.
Monday, we will observe Labor Day with no school for students or staff
Tuesday, we will distribute chromebooks to students who have returned their signed SDA and paid their $20 Device Protection fee. If you haven’t paid yours yet - please do so as soon as possible. School Cash Online is the preferred method, however we’ll accept cash or check. Tuesday, the Volleyball team will host Chicod at 4 PM.
Also Tuesday, cheerleading tryouts will begin. Information about the tryout schedule, registration and a printable link for physicals can be found on the school’s website under Extracurricular.
Thursday, the football team will host EB Aycock at 4 PM. Mustang Maniacs may stay ONLY if they have a prearranged ride to pick them up by 5:15 PM.
Students are reminded that good sportsmanship behavior is expected, school rules are still applicable regarding student conduct and dress code. Body paint is not permitted. Students whose behavior is not becoming of a Mustang Maniac will be asked to leave and not return for the season. Students not picked up in a timely manner will also not be allowed to stay after for future events.
After Tuesday, students are reminded they MUST bring their fully charged chromebook to school with them every day.
Permission forms for Backpack Pals will be going home with students this week. If this is something your family is interested in please fill out the form and have the student return it to their homeroom teacher.
We are thankful for your grace and patience regarding bus routes. It’s not been perfect by any means, but we’ve been working with Transportation at the district level every day to improve how we serve students. Due to overcrowding on some buses, routes are being reconfigured in the coming days. As a reminder, if you have not received communication from admin with a bus assignment, you are not to get on a bus.
A flyer is being distributed to students, per the NC State Board of Education and section 115C-12(47) of the NC General Statutes. The information is for students reminding them they deserve to be safe. Please look for the flyer this week.
Students seem to be enjoying being back in the cafeteria. We’re noticing many students not eating lunch. If you are in need free/reduced cost application, please stop by the office, apply online from the PCS website or ask your HR teacher for one.

This is Mrs. Johnson with your Hope Happenings for the week of August 29th.
I’d like to welcome our new families to our Sunday calls! Included in this message will be updates and other information about the upcoming week. Following this call is also an email, if you don’t receive the email or the call, it means we don’t have the most current information for you. Please keep us updated!
Tomorrow is our first day of school! Early Bird will begin at 7:45 am in the gym. As a reminder, the cost is $1 per day and can be paid daily/or weekly. We encourage you to use School Cash Online to prepay!
Car riders should remain in their cars until they are greeted by a staff member beginning at 8:15 AM. There is no parking and walking students to the door, parents should stay in their car. Students should be ready to exit once the car stops. Only the front lane that runs in front of the school and the far lane, closest to Mills Road are available to drop off. In order to keep our students and staff safe we ask that you pay attention to the staff directing traffic, maintain a slow speed and follow the traffic flow. Please refrain from using your cellphone while in line as we learn the flow of traffic.
Pick up will occur in these same two lanes. 6th & 7th grades will meet their rides in the lane nearest lane to school and 8th grade in the lane nearest to Mills Road. Please pull all the way forward, following the direction of the staff on duty.
Students riding the bus this week should plan to be at the bus stop about 15 minutes before the scheduled pick up time and stay up to 15 minutes after as we work through our new routes.
If you didn’t turn in your Student Device Agreement at Open House, please return it ASAP. We need parents to complete and return this form ASAP in order to be issued a PCS Device. You can pay your school fees online or with cash/check at school.
Congratulations to our new Mustang Volleyball Team and Mustang Football team! We can’t wait to see your season kick off! College Colors Day is Friday, September 2nd. We encourage students to wear their favorite college colors or team gear. Students will also have the opportunity to hear about different colleges their teachers have attended and ways they were involved on campus.
The first week of school is always wildly fun and exhausting. We appreciate your grace as we navigate this new school year. Please pack your patience if your student is a car rider. Many families will drive their students in the first few days of school - but we promise it will settle down quickly and we’ll have cars in and out in a flash!
Go ahead and set those alarms now - the tardy bell rings at 8:25. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at Hope Middle School, where everyday is a GREAT day to be a Mustang!
