C.M. Eppes Middle School and Lakeforest Elementary School were formally recognized on Sept. 5 by the State Board of Education as NC STEM Schools of Distinction based on a rigorous application, extensive portfolio and evaluative site visit.
C.M. Eppes was represented by principal Kim Harris, STEM coordinator Keshia Speight and retired STEM coordinator Tracey Brown who received the banner and award during its recognition as a Prepared STEM School.
Lakeforest, which was recognized as Pitt County’s first Model STEM School, was represented by principal Anthony Perkins, STEM coordinator Nicole Scuron and fifth-grade STEM ELA teacher Pamela Ward.
Pitt County Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Steve Lassiter and PCS Director of STEM Education Dr. Jennifer Stalls joined both schools to celebrate its dedication to providing opportunities for students to collaborate, create, think critically and communicate both in and out of the classroom.
"I could not be more proud to work alongside some of the best educators our state has to offer," Stalls said. "At Lakeforest and C.M. Eppes, teachers excel at providing opportunities for students to engage in authentic learning experiences.
"Those experiences, combined with rich community partnerships provide students and their families with access to information and resources to prepare students for their futures. In Pitt County Schools, we believe STEM can happen in any subject, in any grade level, at any time and in any place, and these two schools embody that every single day."
C.M. Eppes and Lakeforest join three other STEM Schools of Distinction in Pitt County - Eastern Elementary School, Wellcome Middle School and Innovation Early College High School.
