FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL

    July 10, 2018

Dear Pitt County Parents and Families,

Wahl-Coates Elementary School of the Arts is a K-5 Elementary School located at 2200 East 5th Street in Greenville, NC. The school that began in the early 20th century as a training school for East Carolina Teachers College (ECU) is now a "School of the Arts".

All students in grades K-3 take beginning strings as a part of their encore curriculum. Our students may elect to take Orchestra/Strings as their encore during their 4th and 5th grade years. In addition, all students take Theater Class once per week during their encore period. Students are given the opportunity to enter into a large number of art contests/displays, and exhibits throughout the year. Our Choral Arts Program strengthens each year as our students perform in our school and community. Our Drama Club features at least 2 school-wide productions per year. Last year (2017-18) our students presented ALICE in WONDERLAND in the Fall and the musical, THE WIZARD OF OZ, in the Spring. At the end of each year we have our annual talent show where students showcase their talents in front of their peers and members of the community.

Also, our Encore and Arts teachers are in the regular classroom daily providing additional support by integrating literacy concepts into the curriculum through movement, music, song, dance, and through visual and non-visual representations.

We have developed a strong partnership with East Carolina University's Arts Department. Through this partnership, in collaboration with our faculty members, robust arts classes are offered after school, such as, Guitar, Piano, Visual Arts/Painting, Pottery, Story-Book Theater, and we hope to offer Dance in the future. Also, all 6 grade-levels will take part in ECU's Storybook Theater Program and will attend one of the six story-book theater performances scheduled throughout the school year.

St. James United Methodist Church has "adopted" Wahl-Coates School of the Arts and has provided our students and teachers with additional supplies, has funded community events, and cookouts for our school community and faculty and continues to provide on-going support through various beautification projects on our campus. I can't say enough positive things about the ways St. James' touches the lives of our students and staff.

Finally, brain research indicates that the arts foster higher order thinking and problem-solving skills and enhances the learning experience. It is our goal to help each student recognize their own personal strengths and talents by providing creative learning opportunities.

It is my hope that you will take advantage of the great opportunities for learning and personal growth that await your child(ren) at Wahl-Coates Elementary School of the Arts. We are an "Open-Enrollment" school and I invite you to contact the school for more information on how your child may attend.

If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me at 252-752-2514.

Let's make this school year a "Year to Remember!"

    GO PIRATES!

    Sincerely,

    Marty E. Baker
