Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading club for students. The purpose is to encourage students to read high quality books and have fun while competing with peers. A student participates by reading from the book list provided for that year's Battle of the Books. The school battles are held in March or April. Therefore, students have plenty of time to read the books during the school year. Reading through the summer is completely optional, but available to students. A typical "Battle" is a full day tournament in which student teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list. At competition, students play several rounds, including two individual rounds. At the end of the morning, points are totaled and the winning team and individuals are announced.
