• Extra-Curricular Activities


    Young adolescents need a variety of experiences beyond those offered in the core and encore curriculum. Hope Middle School will work to provide students with the opportunities to have a well-rounded educational experience.


    Battle of the Books


    Students who are interested in this competition read books selected by the N.C. Battle of the Books committee. They audition for the team by answering questions about books they read. Then the team competes against other teams from Pitt County Schools in a quiz bowl format.

     

    Math Teams


    Eighth grade Math I students chosen by his/her teacher may participate in regional and state math contests. Other math competitions are available for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math students.


    Mentoring Programs


    Girls in Pearls - empowers young ladies in middle school to achieve academic, career, and socio-emotional self-sufficiency. Girls in Pearls provides year round programming and mentoring to develop character, leadership, self-confidence, and social consciousness, including the desire and ability to mentor others. Girls in Pearls helps young women to find their voice, define their goals and dreams, and establish support networks to move forward in the world with pride and self-confidence. Through goal setting our girls work on reaching tangible goals. These skills are essential to success in school, work and life. Additional program elements include ongoing academic support, annual college tour, community field trips, guest speakers, and many other unique components. Monthly topics include but are not limited to: Health Growth and Development, Etiquette & Manners, Image and Self Esteem, Safety, Self Advocacy, Organization, Academics, Career, Goal Setting, Choices, Peer Pressure, Conflict Resolution, and Ethics. Although, we meet once a month, daily support is available to our members. Girls in Pearls  serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.     National Junior Beta Club


    Sixth through eighth grade students are eligible for the Hope National Junior Beta Club. Candidates must have a cumulative average of 95 or higher to be invited. This average is determined by averaging all core and encore classes from each nine weeks. Students are invited to an induction ceremony during the 2nd semester of the school year.

     

    Science Olympiad


    Each school based-team of up to 15 members will cross-train for a variety of events in their skill set. The events are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering, and technology.


    Student Government Association (SGA)


    The Student Government Association is composed of two students from each homeroom in grades six through eight. These representatives assist in promoting school projects and in reporting any information that students may need to know to their homerooms. The criteria for participating in SGA are:

    • An overall ―C average.
    • A good disciplinary record
    • Dependability

    The purpose of SGA is to carry out school projects, to teach leadership skills, and to teach parliamentary procedures. Any student wishing to run for SGA VP or President must have been an active member for at least one year.
