National Board Certification
What is National Board Certification?
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was formed in 1987 with an objective of advancing the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards. National Board Certification, which is the highest credential in the teaching profession,is a voluntary certification process. Participants of this process are evaluated by high and rigorous standards for accomplished teaching through performance-based assessments.
Certification typically takes from one to three years to complete. As a part of the process, candidates build an e-portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Certification is currently available to educators in 25 subject areas.
*NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and nongovernmental organization.
