About Transportation
The Transportation Department Office and Garage are located at 975 Woodridge Park Road in Greenville, down the street from The Kathy Taft Center for Excellence and Leadership in Education. The office and garage can be reached by telephone at 252-756-1424.
The goal of the Transportation Department is to provide safe, efficient student transportation to and from school. The Pitt County Schools Transportation Department ranks 12th in North Carolina in the number of students transported to and from school each day. Daily, during the regular school term, approximately 195 school buses run each day, transporting 11,000 students. To maximize busing efficiency, Pitt County Schools currently operates 81% of the school bus fleet on a two-tier system (buses run an elementary school route and then a secondary school route).
Forty (40) buses serve runs for special transportation programs, which include Exceptional Children, Pre-K Programs, North East Region School of Biotechnology and Agriscience, Early College High School at PCC, Innovation Early College High School at ECU and the ECU Lab School. All school buses have GPS installed that integrates with the Edulog Parent Portal App. Some of the Special Transportation buses have a safety assistant on board to assist the bus driver. In addition to those buses, some contract transportation is provided for students as needed.
School buses are run outside of the regular day school term for summer school and specially-funded programs that meet the criteria for the use of school buses. PCS maintains activity buses that are for extra-curricular activities.
Bus routing is completed utilizing a computer database with a geocode based road network based off of Pitt County GIS and Google Maps. The Transportation Information Management Systems (TIMS), which is utilized by school districts across North Carolina, is coordinated through the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at North Carolina State University.
For those seeking employment with the PCS Transportation Department, a thorough background check (to include driving record) and drug testing (screening and then random testing throughout) are conducted. To be hired as a bus driver, an interested applicant must have a clean driving record while holding a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class-B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
