The Public Information Office
Pitt County Schools would like to introduce the reorganization of their District Communication Team. Each member has a unique skill set that will lead the district in effective communication strategies. The District Communication Team consists of:
- Beth Ulffers, Director of Outreach and Public Relations
- Tom McClellan, Public Information Officer
The Superintendent of Pitt County Schools, Dr. Ethan Lenker, states: “I am thrilled to introduce the reorganization of the district communication team. Beth and Tom each bring unique skill sets that will enhance Pitt County Schools ability to effectively communicate with our parents and students, staff, and community. As we work to engage our community and school system through the Strategic Plan, this team will play a crucial role in its implementation over the coming years. At Pitt County Schools, we emphasize strong communication with our school community. I know this new team will play an integral role in the growth of our schools as we continue to Engage, Empower, and Elevate.”
Director of Outreach and Public Relations
Beth Ulffers has been appointed to the new position of Pitt County Schools Director of Outreach and Public Relations while continuing as the Executive Director of the Pitt County Educational Foundation, a role she has held since August of 2020.
Previously, she was a music educator with PCS at Wintergreen Primary School beginning in 1998. She earned her bachelor and master of music degrees from East Carolina University and has served as a leader in Pitt County for many years. Mrs. Ulffers was honored as the PCS Teacher of the Year in 2013 and the NC Music Educators Association Elementary Music Teacher of the Year in 2017. She has strong community engagement experience and has led several community collaborative and advocacy projects since 2011.
“Throughout my years of teaching and serving the Educational Foundation, I realized the importance of building relationships throughout the community,” Ulffers said. “I am passionate about joining forces with PCS families, staff, local businesses, and the greater community to advocate for all Pitt County Schools students and teachers. I look forward to working with Tom McClellan as we build our communication team to effectively serve our community.”
Public Information Officer
McClellan, who has over 30 years of service-oriented communications, public relations, crisis management and administrative experience, most recently served as assistant athletics director overseeing the media relations division at East Carolina University since 2004.
His efforts at ECU were recognized nationally with multiple selections as a Super 11 Team Member (top 11 FBS sports information offices for outstanding services provided) by the Football Writers Association of America. During his tenure with the Pirates, McClellan also handled NCAA Media Coordinator duties for four baseball regional tournaments and directed communications operations for a department that currently features 18 sport programs.
Prior to his move to Greenville, McClellan spent a total of eight years at Georgia Southern University and four at Stetson (Fla.) University in similar roles. He was part of four FCS national championships while working with the Eagles and headed media operations for two NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Regionals during his stay with the Hatters.
McClellan earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism/public relations from Sam Houston State (Texas) University and was the recipient of the school's Distinguished Journalism Alumni Award. As an undergraduate, he was a four-year member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and served as the chapter's president and treasurer.
"The opportunity to serve and be of value to young people is something I passionately embrace and look forward to," McClellan said. "This is an exciting new journey in a community I have become endeared to, and I thank Dr. Lenker and the entire PCS family for its warm welcome and trust. Being in a position to work alongside Beth will be a privilege and offers much synergy to what I believe will be an effective and dynamic communications team.”
