Inaugural North Carolina Bring Your Legislator to School Day
Today, members of the North Carolina General Assembly took part in the inaugural North Carolina Bring Your Legislator to School Day. Lawmakers were invited by members of the NC Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year Network, the Public School Forum of North Carolina, and bi-partisan legislative sponsors to visit schools in their respective jurisdictions and engage with school communities. In total, over 70 legislators accepted the invitation to participate.
Legislative Co-sponsors of Bring Your Legislator to School Day include Sen. Amy Galey, Sen. Rachel Hunt, Sen. Graig Meyer, Rep. Vernatta Alston, Rep. Allen Buansi, Rep. Ashton Clemmons, Rep. Kevin Crutchfield, Rep. Zack Hawkins, and Rep. John Torbett.
In Pitt County, Rep. Gloristine Brown, Rep. Dr. Tim Reeder and Sen. Kandie Smith visited South Greenville Elementary School, J.H. Rose High School and Innovation Early College High School. In addition, Jill Camnitz (N.C. Board of Education) was in attendance along with PCS Superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker.
During their visits, legislators engaged in a walk-through of schools with the principals and superintendents, and participated in conversations with teachers and students. The goal of these visits was to show legislators what current state investment in education looks like in practice during the day-to-day reality of North Carolina’s elementary and secondary schools.
