Capozzi Named Financial Operations Manager
Karen Capozzi, who has provided fiscal leadership for two public school systems spanning a combined 10 years, has been named financial operations manager for Pitt County Schools according to an announcement from PCS Superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker.
Prior to a recent appointment as operations manager with the College of Medical Science at the University of Lynchburg (Va.), Capozzi served as business manager with the Berlin (N.Y.) Central School District from 2013 to 2022. In addition to preparing the annual general fund budget, she established, directed and supervised its execution and financial accounting control system. Capozzi also had oversight of identifying all revenue sources and assisting administrators in preparing grant applications to secure new assets.
Capozzi, following a relocation from New York to Virginia, accepted a position as chief financial officer with Lynchburg City Public Schools in July, 2022 where she headed the division's management system and supplied leadership, guidance and technical direction to staff on fiscal affairs and operations matters.
Her role at PCS includes the development of the district's annual budget, coordinating and supervising job responsibilities within the financial services office and preparing reports for the Board of Education and both system-wide and internal departments. Capozzi also monitors the district cash position and maintains a continuous and sustainable internal control program for all funds that ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
"We are glad to welcome Karen as an integral part of our finance department," PCS Chief Financial Officer Michael Hardy said. "With Karen’s knowledge and experience in school business operations, we know she will be a valuable asset to our team."
Capozzi has filled Hardy's previous position, which was vacated upon his promotion to his current role on Dec. 19.
She is a magna cum laude graduate of Campbell University, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration, before following with a Master of Business Administration & Accounting from Liberty (Va. ) University in 2011.
