• PCS Superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory recently updated the Pitt County Board of Education on the district’s continued work towards Unitary Status, as ordered by Judge Malcolm J. Howard in 2009. Included in the update was the announcement of several upcoming dates for Education and Input sessions for the public.

     

    A school district is unitary when it has eliminated the effects of past segregation to the extent practicable. When courts declare a school system unitary, the court system no longer supervises the school system’s student assignment and other decisions. The district must submit a report to the court by December 31, 2012, detailing the Board’s efforts and progress toward unitary status.

     

    In an attempt to help educate our community regarding the history and process being utilized by PCS as we work to achieve Unitary Status, an Education Session will be held on March 26, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation Center located off County Home Road. Attorney Ken Soo will be present at this meeting to share information related to the process.

     

    Following the Education Session, PCS’ staff members will facilitate a series of three Input Sessions providing details and answering questions regarding the Unitary Status process. Feedback will be collected from participants. The Input Sessions will be held from 6-7 p.m. on the following dates:

     

    • March 29, 2012 – South Central High School Media Center
    • April 5, 2012 – J. H. Rose High School Lecture Hall
    • April 19, 2012 – North Pitt High School Media Center
