In-State Requirements
Graduates of an accredited North Carolina college/university (IHE) will work through their school to obtain a N.C. license. This includes student teaching and meeting all requirements to be recommended by the IHE for teacher licensure. The school will notify the student of the college and state requirements for a license. Steps to Obtaining a N.C. Professional Educator's License.
Upon program completion, graduates will need to register for a NCDPI Online Licensure System account. If the graduate has previous teaching or relevant non-teaching work experience, they should notify the college so they can include the experience request forms in the Initial In-State Licensure Application. This saves the graduate money.
Upload into your online application, degree-dated transcripts - bachelor's, master's, and all other post-secondary studies, licensure examination(s), experience request forms for previous work - if relevant, and any other requested documentation. The application will have a page where you’ll answer the statements of applicant questions. If you’ve been hired with a local school district, you’ll need to include that employer on the affiliations page of your application.
You will be required to pay a $70 non-refundable/non-transferable licensure processing fee with a valid credit card. (Visa or Mastercard Credit/Debit accepted.) After submission, the application is routed to the Institute of Higher Education (IHE). The IHE verifies completion of the program and eligibility for a NC teaching license. After IHE Review, the application is routed to DPI for final processing.
DPI will issue the Initial (3 year) License (IPL) and send a requirements letter to the email address that was entered on your original application. The DPI requirements letter includes the expiration date of the license and what the educator needs to do to convert the Initial License (IPL) to a Continuing (5 year renewal) License (CPL). (i.e. testing and/or additional coursework, participating in a beginning teacher support program, etc.)
