Speech Therapy
Core Mission
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) support students in developing and applying their communication skills to succeed in the educational setting. They provide individualized evaluations and goals tailored to each student's needs.
Overview
- Pitt County Schools currently have 34 SLPs serving students Pre-K–12+.
- SLPs are case managers and related service providers who advocate for students, support teachers, and participate on district teams (MTSS, Autism Support, Unique Mealtime, Assistive Technology).
- SLPs assist with mass and MTSS hearing screenings and provide screening support when referrals are made.
Key Areas Addressed
- Speech sounds (articulation/phonology)
- Language comprehension and expressive language
- Stuttering (fluency)
- Social communication and pragmatic language
- Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)
Why This Matters?
Effective communication skills are fundamental to classroom learning, social participation, and long-term success. SLPs help remove communication barriers, in order for students to fully engage in school and in their future opportunities.
